Learning goal: Understand what these devices are and what each is best for.
A computer is a machine that follows instructions to store, process and show information. It can be a desktop (stays on a desk), a laptop (folds and moves with you), or a larger machine in an office or bank.
A smartphone is a small computer you can hold, with a touchscreen and the ability to make calls, send messages and use the internet through mobile data or Wi-Fi.
A tablet sits in between: bigger screen than a phone, lighter than a laptop, usually used by touch.
Device | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
Desktop | Long typing, office work, big screen | Cannot be carried |
Laptop | Work and study anywhere | Battery runs out, costs more |
Smartphone | Calls, WhatsApp, M-Pesa, photos | Small screen for long documents |
Tablet | Reading, video, light work | Harder to type for long periods |
All of them do the same basic job: you give an input (typing, touching, speaking), the device processes it, and you get an output (text on screen, sound, a printout).
Try it yourself: List three things you did on a device this week. Which device did you use, and why?
Recap:
- A computer follows instructions to process information.
- Phones, tablets and laptops are all computers in different shapes.
- Choose the device that fits the task.
